Which type of stem cell is best? The ability of the human organism to heal itself is known as regeneration. Two of the main pillars of regenerative medicine are stem cells and growth factors that enhance tissue regeneration and stimulate stem cells.
What are stem cells?
Stem cells are cells capable of giving rise to any other cell in the body. Replacing dying cells and releasing molecules that enhances the repair of damage caused by disease, trauma, and aging.
Two of the main characteristics of stem cells are:
Differentiation: Ability to differentiate into any specialized cell type.
Self-renewal: Ability to maintain themselves as such and produce more stem cells indefinitely.
What types of transplants are there?
From a small sample of donor tissue, we can isolate stem cells in vitro. And stimulated to differentiate into the cell type needed. Then transplanted into the same person from whom they are derived or into another individual.
In other words, an individual can receive stem cells from himself (autologous transplant) or from another person (allogeneic transplant). Stem cells from an autologous source are more compatible and safer.
What dose of stem cells should be used?
The number of stem cells extracted from the donor, purified, and concentrated is generally sufficient to treat certain medical conditions. However, for the treatment of some conditions, it may be necessary to have higher concentrations. Therefore, culturing, expanding, and potentiating them is necessary.
Cultivation increases the risk of contamination, so it is important to comply with stringent quality controls.
Which type of stem cell is best?
Simply put, stem cells can be classified according to their origin. That is, those originating from the embryo, the fetus, the umbilical cord, or an adult organism:
- Embryonic stem cells (ESCs)
- Fetal (FSCs)
- umbilical cord stem cells (UCSC)
- Adult stem cells (ASCs).
ESCs are totipotent, which means that they can differentiate into any type of cell. However, these cells generate great ethical-legal dilemmas and risks of teratoma development. Therefore, in Regenerative Medicine, we do not currently use them.
FSCs have already lost their pluripotency and are considered rather multipotent. Which means that they are only capable of differentiating cells of the same germ layer.
UCSCs are cells that by their primitive nature have characteristics similar to embryonic cells. Surpass adult cells in many characteristics, but without the ethical-legal problems.
ASCs include bone marrow, neural, hematopoietic (HSCs), and adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs).
